The term web3 refers to the next iteration of the internet, but before we dive into what it is, it’s important to take a step back and understand how the internet has evolved over the years.
Evolution of the Internet:
The original internet, Web1 was primarily an information portal where we as users were simply recipients of information and resources only. Sites contained static pages that rarely changed and were connected to a system of hyperlinks. It is also commonly referred to as the “read-only web” because it lacked the necessary forms, controls and interactivity we’ve grown accustomed to today.
As technology evolved, Web2 introduced convenience and tools for participation in the internet, instead of just being a passive recipient of information. Things like social media, blogging, and mobile apps allowed users to be not only consumers of value, but also producers too. We were able to create usernames, upload content, and create profiles. Each of us currently has dozens, or often hundreds of digital identities today. Every website account, application, social profile, gamertag, phone number, email address etc. is another instance of “digital you”. This can be confusing, risky and overall just a poor user experience.
If you want to change your display name or profile picture you have to do so across each and every account. Although you created all of these versions of “digital you”, you do not own them. In a single click, these platforms can censor you or lock you out of your entire online life. We consumers have become the product to these large tech companies, allowing them to profit from our personal data.
Web3 describes a new, decentralized version of the internet where we the users own and are in complete control of our personal data, digital assets, and digital identity. In addition to reading and writing, we are also able to OWN. This is made possible because of blockchain technology.
